I read Fast Food Nation a few years ago and it was indeed scary hearing about where food really comes from! I has already cut out most fast food but that really scared me off of it (though I'm probably guilty of eating some fast food).

I've been vegetarian now since October. My wife has been vegetarian for about a decade. I'm not against eating meat so much as I just don't like not knowing what's going into the meat and how it's processed. It bothers me that people used to be able to get their Omega nutrients from cattle years back but now we can't because of the way cattle is fed.

It's even tough to know what's really in your fruit and vegetables. You can't really know how many pesticides have leaked into the soil that's used to grow.

Great feedback! @paystolivegreen it sounds like Food Inc, will also just support what you already know. It will be interesting to see what else it tells you.... like @MattJabs, who drove out of his way to go see it - glad it was worth it for you - it always feels nice to have one's beliefs/values validated by others! Sounds like she was already on board anyway, like I said, even for a decade-old vegetarian, this movie had an emotional impact and it's hard not to feel passionate about it. It doesn't matter what aspect you grab onto and try to do something about - as long as we each do at least one positive change, it will help.

@Matt_SF - yes, the occasional bug I have found in my organic foods. I take extra care to clean my broccoli, etc. Just rinse them all very well.

Food, Inc. completely supported all of my concerns about the food industry...

BUT...

It has completely changed the way my wife views things! She said... "what you have been saying for years is actually true." I thanked her for having such high faith in me these past years :-)

With her help (which I need if I want my home to make a difference) we have now committed to eating only local, healthy foods.

We personally do not have a problem with eating meat as long as it was raised correctly. This is not because we are animal rights activists, instead we just do not want to put contaminated food into our bodies.

I am very excited. This movie has moved our lives into a whole new chapter that I have been wanting to explore fully for years, but could not because my wife & I were not on the same page... we are now... thanks to Food, Inc.

If you do not see this movie (or find similar TRUE material), you run the risk of remaining ignorant about the food you are feeding your own family! Traditional food sources are now killing us, and we need to change this by voting every time we shop & every time we eat!

Cheers!

Great post. I have read lots about Food, Inc. and I wish the movie was playing closer, but I need to make the trip to see this movie. The meat industry is disgusting and needs to change. They care only about making profits an little about our health. We need to start supporting local farmer's, whether it's for produce, dairy or meats. The prices can be slightly more, but we will be much healthier and have much more productive and long lives. It also allows you to see where you food is coming from and know how it was raised or grown. Let's hope we can change our ways as a country, which I don't see us doing anytime in the near future...

Well its not really the dangers, but the funnier ones are the ones that gross people out.

-- There is X amount of insect parts allowed per grams of most spices.
-- X amount of aphids/grasshoppers/crickets are allowed per kg of raw food.

That's just the aesthetic or the "eww" effect I tell folks to gross them out. But if you reduce those levels, you increase the concentration of pesticides farmers will use. I'll eat bug parts any day.

Most of the lesser known stuff revolves around items like...

-- The poultry industry's profit lies in selling water weight. A whole chicken might weigh 4lbs going into a water filled "chill tank" to bring it down to a slow microbial growth temp, but will also magically gain 10%. So a 4lb bird now weights ~ 4.4lbs. So they magically created a 10% profit for themselves.

-- That various generic OTC drugs are made on by the same manufacturer, same assembly line, and sometimes even the formulation as the name brand drug, but most consumers will still pay 3x more for name brand. We referred to it as a branding effect or placebo effect by the consumer.

Only problem is, one you hear some of these facts, you can't unlearn them! ;-)

Um, my bad... I was wrong:

"In the past, McDonald's Corporation owned a majority interest in Chipotle. McDonald's has since sold their entire stake in Chipotle; full divestment was completed in October 2006."

Woops. Even so, in 2006, they used free range!

Interestingly enough. all of the stores are company owned... not franchised.

I worked as a USDA inspector in grad school, and as a pharmaceutical regulatory consultant keeping the FDA off Big Pharma's back for about five years. While most of the regulations make "decent enough" sense, some of the allowable deviations or mass production practices would blow your mind.

You name the food, and I could likely tell you loopholes in the regulations to make you swear it off.
